A neutron source serves as a critical experimental platform for advanced nuclear energy research and interdisciplinary applications of nuclear technology. The compact neutron source SNEG utilizes an ECR ion source to ionize and generate deuterium ions, which are then extracted and accelerated by a DC high-voltage electric field to bombard a target, producing 2.5 MeV neutrons via deuterium-deuterium reactions. This compact neutron source can be applied in neutron physics experiments, detector calibration, neutron irradiation, elemental analysis via neutron activation, neutron radiography, neutron cancer therapy, and isotope production.

 Design Philosophy

The design philosophy of the compact neutron source SNEG is to achieve high-intensity neutron generation within a limited space through innovative design and key technological breakthroughs, enabling the miniaturization of high-current neutron sources while improving usability. Key technologies employed include integrated beam extraction and acceleration, long-life self-supporting target with enhanced heat dissipation, and high-gradient, low-flashover high-voltage insulation.

Operating Principle

Deuterium plasma is generated by ionizing deuterium gas using an ECR high-current ion source. The deuterium ion beam is then extracted and accelerated by a DC high-voltage electric field to bombard the target, producing 2.5 MeV neutrons via deuterium-deuterium (D-D) reactions. If tritium is adsorbed on the target, deuterium-tritium (D-T) reactions occur, generating 14 MeV neutrons.

The compact neutron source SNEG serves as an integrated equipment and testing service platform for non-destructive testing, radiation medicine, scientific research and education, industrial materials analysis, and detector applications. It is capable of neutron physics experiments, detector calibration, neutron irradiation, elemental analysis via neutron activation, neutron radiography, neutron cancer therapy, and isotope production.
